A Short Sketch of the
Life of
ROSEL
PATISON HYDE
written
July 14, 1947 by himself
Rosel Hyde was born in the home of his Uncle Andrew Griffeth, December
31, 1884 in Fairview, Idaho, the son of Austin Cowles Hyde and Mary Melissa
Griffeth. Our family lived in Fairview for six years and then moved to Star
Valley, Wyoming.
My father settled on a ranch in Auburn, Wyoming that father had traded
for his property in Fairview. Here I grew up doing the things that a normal boy
does. I attended school in a one—room school house. I went to Sunday school and
sacrament meetings regular with my parents. At the age of seventeen, I was
called to take a Missionary course at the fielding academy in Star Valley. One
year later I was called on a mission to the Eastern States. I was assigned to
the East Pennsylvania Conference. I spent most of my time in Philadelphia and
Baltimore, Maryland. I returned home in 1904 and went to work for a missionary
companion in Oakley, Utah. I stayed only a short time, then went to work for
the Star Valley Livestock Company, herding sheep. In the fall of 1907, I met a
lovely girl, Caroline Amelia Allen, from Lewiston, Utah. On the October 23,
1908 we were scalded in the Logan Temple.
I homesteaded one hundred sixty acres of range and farm land, adjourning
the one hundred sixty acres we bought three miles north of Aubourn, and lived
there for three years. During this time I was called to be a member of the ward
Bishopric. I served until we moved to Southern Idaho in 1919, settling in
Rupert, Idaho. Here going was pretty tough for awhile. I was not an experienced
farmer. When we thought we were doing pretty good then the Great Depression hit
us, and it was tough going again for the next ten years.
During these years I taught classes in Mutual and Sunday School. I was
Sunday School Superintendent for five years. then served on the Stake Board. I
was Stake Superintendent for fifteen years.
In 1946
we rented our farm and retail business to our son, Allen, and moved into town.
We are the parents of eight children.
